UC Irvine Rowing went to Lake Natoma in Sacramento with nearly 80 athletes to compete for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing championships April 27 and 28.
The highlight of the regatta was the Women's team winning the overall points trophy over perennial power UCSB and the D2 and D3 NCAA schools with finals finishes in the V8, N8, double, and medal finishes in the 2V8 and pair, indeed featuring two pairs in the grand final. The women's varsity 8 was the top club varsity 8 finishing ahead of OCC after they had been beaten at SDCC, Collins Cup, and Berg Cup. They showed their depth in the varsity fielding a varsity 4 in the petite final that had not doubled from V8 or 2V8 as did their opponents.
The Men's V8 achieved the final this year against tough competition and raced to near dead heat with UC Davis who had soundly beat them by 6 seconds at the SDCC. The Men's Novice 4 finished with an impressive silver medal finish, and the 2V8 2nd Novice 8 and Varsity light 4 raced in the grands.
The teams are running an Ergathon to raise team funds for ACRA, see above link to follow progress or to help out.
UCI Leadership Academy
The UCI Leadership Academy is an ongoing effort to connect current students with alums and friends who can mentor and advise in their professions and/or avocations.
Students have shadowed alums in their jobs, been offered opportunities at internships and gotten help with networking and job applications.
It is a unique and special program.
I've set up a google form to see if it'll help connect alums with students. It's a simple form that populates a spreadsheet. Student and alum/friend fill out the same form, the results will populate in a spreadsheet that form users will have access to peruse.
We've collected a good number of participants who'll be receiving a list of candidate contacts via email.
