With the onset of the pandemic, we saw a number of senior rowers’ collegiate careers ended unexpectedly. Friends of UCI Rowing has chosen to develop a dedicated scholarship fund to help the most determined student athletes through this challenging time.

Words from Coach Brooks regarding scholarships:

“Imagine being in your senior season as a four-year oarsman, completely dedicated to your craft, and almost overnight COVID-19 ends your collegiate rowing career. There are two avenues you could take: give in and give up, or find a way forward. The later is exactly what some of our senior oarsmen were able to do. They did their homework and applied to masters programs at UC Irvine (very competitive ones might I add) and are you surprised they got in? I’m not. These are exceptional young men and will have fruitful careers. But, for now they are back at Irvine with one more year of eligibility, hungry to bring home a championship. Now I’m asking you to support their efforts! They were not expecting this added tuition expense so suddenly, both of them are working, going to school, and training for our return to the water. We are actively raising funds to help offset some of their tuition costs. Will you lend a hand?”

Connor Basile ’19 and Alex Wearn ’19 were fundamental to the development of today’s team culture. Both of these exceptional young oarsmen are deserving of financial aid and assistance for their academic and athletic achievements. They are both full time student graduate-athletes, working, and are critical to keeping the team running and motivated in the most challenging of circumstances. Let’s support the future of UC Irvine Rowing.

Your help with this special fundraising effort will ensure the success of the team and enable UCI Crew to emerge from COVID-19 stronger and better than ever!
